UK's Most Popular Used Cars See Slight Price Drop in Q3

The third quarter of this year has seen a modest 1.4% decrease in the values of the UK's most beloved used cars, according to the latest AA Cars Used Car Index. But don't be too quick to hit the brakes – there's more to this story than meets the eye.

As the leaves began to fall, so did the average price of the 20 most popular used cars, settling at a reasonable £16,736 throughout July, August, and September. This figure marks a slight dip from the previous quarter when the average stood at £16,965. However, take a step back, and you'll see that Q3 still shines 3.4% brighter than the same period last year, according to AA Cars' trusty statistics.

Leading the pack in popularity during this period was none other than the beloved Ford Fiesta, with the Ford Focus following close behind in second place. Completing the top five are the Nissan Qashqai, Vauxhall Corsa, and Volkswagen Golf, in that order.

Notable in this race of used car prices, the Mercedes C-Class witnessed the largest annual price decrease, taking a 10.4% dip to reach £19,225, while the Kia Sportage made a significant move in the opposite direction, with prices soaring by 13.9%.

What about the Ford Fiesta, you ask? Well, it may have matched the average trend, with typical used prices slipping by a mere 0.4% on a quarterly basis, but it remains perched higher than last year, holding its ground at £11,148.

In the realm of electrified models, the top 10 most popular used EVs and hybrids experienced a 7% price dip between Q2 and Q3. The average price of these green machines listed on AA Cars during this quarter came in at a reasonable £19,932, down from £22,021 in the previous period.

Surprisingly, the hybrid Toyota Yaris led the pack as the most sought-after eco-friendly choice, with its price showing a slight uptick of 0.4%. However, the rest of the top 10 experienced a fall in their average prices over the quarter.

Mark Oakley, director of AA Cars, offers his sage advice: "The average price of the UK's most popular used cars continues to fall. Although prices on average are still higher than last year, this is not the case for every model, and there are some great deals available for drivers prioritising good value for money."

For those considering a switch to a greener vehicle, Oakley suggests that now might be the perfect time. The second-hand market is steadily seeing more EVs and hybrids entering the scene, expanding choice and driving prices down. He further adds, "Switching to a green vehicle can be a great way to future-proof yourself as more cities roll out or expand clean air zones, not to mention saving on fuel bills."
